Back in my baby girl 20s, there was something absurd and familiar to get into every night. Trashy indigo lighting somewhere in the city. Dirty Gin Shirleys and sticky floors down at La Cita. Writhing weirdos, weightless and free. Heavy synths. Music for lovers.

We were all doe-eyed allies then, moving through the dark, slipping into warehouse afterparties on the outskirts of town. Strangers making out with strangers. Time stretching like warm asphalt under the city’s neon hum. I met Marty in the middle of all this, at Cha Cha late one night, and we fell in love fast. We started a band. We moved back to Hollywood.

His friend Willy from the Vineyard crashed on our couch for a bit and wrote a song—Shadows in the Dark.

Willy moved out. Months passed. And then, everything shifted. Our Hollywood bungalow was broken into. We were tied up, butt-naked, by three men who took everything. We counted to one hundred and sixty. We untied ourselves. We watched them drive away in both of our cars.

Things were different now. Not all at once. But nothing is ever really all at once.

Shadows in the Dark—The Candle

It is an imprint of childhood you—barefoot, reckless, running through blackberry thickets without fear. It is the unhinged, adult version of the smoky churches you grew up in—equal parts intoxicating and terrifying. It is both running toward and away from every moment like some possessed Caesium atom.

Heady. Haunting. The scent of moving through the world with nothing but your stories. You and all your lovers and friends dripping in velvet and vanilla. Top down, patchouli smoke rings disappearing in the rearview. Cruising through the Shadowlands in your old 1980s BMW—golden under a full moon, thankful to be alive.
