Shadows of a Former Flame—The Candle
It was all over now. I laid across the staircase, in the garden I had tended to, in the rain. So much rain. I smoked in the doorway, watching slugs fall into my wine cup, listening to the wind move through the mulberry tree.
The house felt different—haunted, maybe, but not by anything supernatural. Ghosts of plans that would never happen, echoes of things unsaid. There was a trip we were supposed to take. There were stories I thought would continue. There were birds that fell from trees the day a father left this world. There were ravens watching every morning walk, outlasting everything else.
In the midst of all of it, I planted sweet peas and built a trellis for my grandmother’s R.I.P. day. I watered a jacaranda sent from far away, wrapped in wet paper towels, a package of love and memory. I stuck up paint samples and scrawled on them: This is only a panic attack. It will pass. It helped.
This was the first candle I made that I loved.
Scents are sneaky like that—tied to people, places, versions of yourself that don’t exist anymore. I might never light this candle again. But the silver lining, and now for you to enjoy, is that this candle brought me comfort in a home that felt at once familiar and foreign. A place caught between presence and memory.
I learned to love the apparitions. I begrudgingly welcomed their lessons.
This candle is Shadow 1. The first spark of a mad idea. The beginning of something unknown. A new, unexpected, unwanted adventure. The baby buds forming out of the sludge of clay dirt, rocky soil, and despair.
This is the shake-up of a dull routine.
Shadows of a Former Flame is: wild violets on an old path, a decade with a lover, a decade with a lover gone, ravens on a clothing line of white t-shirts, grandmothers knitting wool in linen and cashmere, a plum orchard, and the storm that sometimes feels like it will never let up.
This is slugs in your wine cup. This is taking the sleep when you can get it.
Comfort before the inertia.
