Shadows As Above, So Below—The Candle

Beneath the dirt, the earthworms spin depleted nutrients into gold. Burrowed deep beneath the ground, the groundhogs feed their families on tulip bulbs and roots alone. And up above—Luna moths drift carelessly for one night, bats swarm in and out of rafters in Tehachapi, and pigeons in South Central turn tricks in the sky.

The moon watches. The fruit rat watches.

The garden has taken a beating this year. The plants have seen their brethren fall to anthracnose, fungal wilt, grubs, and the scorching Santa Anas. Nonetheless, I made a promise on mushrooms once, under the mulberry tree, to be a steward of this land. So it’s fine. Some wilt, others flourish. I care until it’s of no benefit to either party.

And then there’s the moon garden—quiet and still. Silver bush morning glories glow softly in the dark, untouched by the day’s heat or noise, isolated in their own calm luminescence—a pocket of quiet in a world of noise.

Moonlight threads through the branches, casting soft shadows over the garden. The air is thick, swelling with clove and geranium deep down in the belly. A reminder of everything between above and below, it all keeps moving: the earthworms, the moths, the fruit rats, you and me.

Some things stay long after they should’ve gone.
